Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a device used to administer an electric shock through the chest wall to the heart. Its built-in computer assesses the patient’s heart rhythm, judges whether defibrillation is needed, and then administers the shock. Audible and visual prompts guide the user through the process.
CPR can sustain a patient for a short time, but cannot restore an organized rhythm. During cardiac arrest, the person’s chance of survival decreases for each minute that passes without defibrillation. AEDs restore a normal heart rhythm in victims of sudden cardiac arrest.
Campus Locations
The College provides AEDs at various locations on campus for use in medical emergencies. The AED device is designed to be used without formal training; however, training decreases time needed to use the device properly.

While AED training is provided to Century employees at no charge, employees are not required to utilize an AED in scope of their employment.
