“Education is a vehicle for growth—In order to get where I want to go, I have to continue to learn new things.”

Century College alum Frank Sandberg takes a strategic approach to his education and his career.  After serving in the US Army as a medic, he was taking prerequisite courses in the Nursing program at the College when he noticed a flyer for a course in bioprinting.  He was intrigued and decided to give it a try, leading to a new career direction.  He knew that he could remain in the medical field if he switched directions, so he continued to take courses in Additive and Digital Manufacturing, and earned a bioprinting certificate.

Century College Experience: Teachers with Industry Experience

Frank enjoyed his time at Century, and stays in touch with his former instructors. “There’s a different feel at Century College than at the bigger universities,” Frank notes. Century’s instructors work in the industry, and I felt like it was in their best interests to impart knowledge to their students.”

He particularly enjoyed working with all of Century’s faculty, such as Randy Jasken, program director for ADM, and Jeff Abel, faculty in the Engineering CAD technology program. In fact, the College is only place where he has kept in touch with his former instructors.

Future Plans

Frank is currently earning on his (online) Masters degree at Penn State in Additive and Digital Manufacturing. Occasionally, he comes into the ADM lab at the College to work on projects, and sometimes gets assistance from Randy.

He’s expanding his knowledge, skills and interests, and wants to begin printing with metals.  He’s also excited by the prospect of continuous learning, growth, and skills-building, and he likes being on the forefront of knowledge in a developing industry.

“The Department of Defense is investing a lot in this area,” Frank says. “And I want to get my foot in the door in this emerging technology, where you can learn as much as you can.”

Advice for new Students

Frank offers this advice for those who are considering a Century College degree: “Go for it. At Century, you really get to feel like you’re part of the community, and it’s more grounded. Students had clear goals, and there’s a diversity in the student body—you see students of all ages and backgrounds—and that’s a unique experience.

“At Century College, the instructors are efficient at getting you where you want to go. If you have a dream, Century will help get you there.”
