November 15, 2024Chris Lindberg’s journey to Century College began when he took Additive and Digital Manufacturing classes while at White Bear Lake High School.
Randy Jasken, Century College’s Additive and Digital Manufacturing Program Director, worked in partnership with the school to offer the course that Chris enrolled in. Credits earned in the course were transferable to Century, which led to Chris’ decision to pursue his undergraduate degree at the College.
ADM, Creativity, and Problem-Solving
Chris thoroughly enjoyed his high school ADM classes, which dovetailed nicely with his knack for creativity and problem-solving, traits he has nurtured since childhood. His early experiences solving puzzles with his grandparents sparked a love for challenges.
He is also artistically inclined, having taken art classes in high school. Additionally, he is a musician and a member of the Century College Concert Band, where he showcases his talents on percussion instruments ranging from snare drums to cymbals, tympanies, and xylophones.
Now in his third year at Century College, majoring in Additive and Digital Manufacturing (ADM), Chris juggles his studies with a part-time contractor role at Boston Scientific.
Workforce Training at Boston Scientific
Chris’ passion for ADM lies in its diverse aspects, particularly the ability to transform an idea sculpted in modeling software into a tangible prototype almost immediately. This hands-on approach resonates deeply with him.
At Boston Scientific, Chris works as a process development laser technician. His role involves developing manufacturing processes and converting parts into tool components using laser technology. He finds immense satisfaction in all aspects of his job, appreciating the enjoyable work environment and the variety of tasks he undertakes.
Randy told him about the job, leading Chris to undergo two rounds of interviews before securing the position. Starting last May, he is currently working as a contractor with the potential to apply for a full-time role after graduation, following one year of service.
Chris also collaborated with Randy as a teaching assistant and attended two manufacturing expos and Century College Career Fairs, where he networked with some of his current colleagues.
Hands-on Training in the Digital Fabrication Lab
A significant part of his experience at Century College has been his time in the Fabrication Lab. The “Fab Lab” offers a range of technologies such as 3D printing, lasers, and embroidery equipment. “Students receive comprehensive training and have the freedom to create virtually anything. This hands-on experience allows them to explore the advantages and disadvantages of different technologies,” Chris notes. “One of my favorite projects was crafting a full-sized canoe paddle using three distinct technologies.”
An Eagle Scout, Chris actively participates in campouts as a leader and frequently visits the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. At Boston Scientific, a small section of the lab is dedicated to tools. Chris plans to utilize laser technology at Century College to create a display case for these tools.
His affinity for problem-solving, honed through his experiences as a Scout, is evident in his ability to think quickly and tackle challenges, whether planning campout meals or organizing daily activities. For now, he envisions continuing his career in the medical field.
Education is important to Chris because, without it, he feels he would lack direction and purpose. It provides him with the opportunity to develop as an individual, discovering his interests, skills, and abilities while also revealing various career opportunities.
Advice for New Students
For those undecided about college or those considering Century College, Chris advises starting with general education courses to get a feel for the college environment. By attending various events, students can explore different facets of the institution and better understand what it has to offer.
Chris would recommend Century College without hesitation. He praises the staff, professors, and fellow students, describing them as wonderful to work with. He also commends the state-of-the-art facilities and the cutting-edge technologies readily available to students.
