November 18, 2024Now in her second year at Century College, Carolina is pursuing a major in Interior Design. Originally from Peru, Carolina comes from a Century family with strong ties to the College, including her brother, two cousins, and three aunts, all Century alumni. Education is highly valued in her family.
Discipline and Preparation for College Life
While in high school, Carolina represented Peru on the International Water Polo Team. Years of early morning practices, followed by school, taught her discipline and time management skills. An artistic soul, she has a passion for painting and drawing and a longstanding interest in architecture.
Carolina visited the United States regularly over the years. Her aunt Liliana Weber, coordinator of the Century Language Lab, showed her around the College, where she met many students and professors, and got a taste of campus life. She knew she wanted to attend Century.
Sharing Peruvian Culture and Strengthening Leadership Skills
Carolina is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the College Honors Society, and also serves as the President of the Spanish Club at Century, under the guidance of Club Advisor Susan Salazar-Kleiner, who is also from Peru. Carolina is enthusiastic about her role as president, and she enjoys sharing her culture with students and organizing events celebrating Peruvian traditions through movies and music.
Additionally, she works as a tutor at the Language Lab, helping students with Spanish. Carolina finds fulfillment in assisting others to improve their Spanish skills. Inspired by her father, a university professor in Peru, she strives for excellence in her studies and adopts his teaching methods when helping others at the Language Lab.
Carolina emphasizes the importance of utilizing the Language Lab, noting that many students need to strengthen their language skills to prepare for the workplace. If they are employed at workplaces such as Target, they will be more able to assist the many customers who speak Spanish and other languages.
Interior Design Internship and Workforce Training
Next semester, Carolina will be starting an internship in Interior Design while managing a 17-credit course load. Her experiences in the design field will further strengthen her skill set and prepare her for future opportunities. Carolina plans to transfer to the University of Minnesota next year to continue her studies in architecture.
With her busy schedule, there isn’t much time to unwind, but Carolina enjoys dining with her family, visiting the cinema, or spending time at the park with her two puppies, a Pomeranian named Molly, and a Golden Doodle named Bella. She enjoys listening to music while working on her paintings or drawings as a way to relax.
Advice for New Students
Carolina offers the following advice for new students: “You’ll find a lot of Student Life events on campus, and you’re to make friends here. You’ll find a lot of resources at Century College–It’s the best college, and you get lots of help.
“You’ll find your community here. Century College is a second home.”
