The Inheritance and Legacy of the Rondo Neighborhood
Reconnecting Rondo
Rondo neighborhood natives, Marvin Roger Anderson, and Keith Baker launched a plan in 2016 to plant new roots in the area devastated by the construction of the I-94 freeway called ReConnect Rondo. The plan is to build a land bridge over I-94 that would reconnect the neighborhood for several blocks (between Chatsworth and Grotto Street) offering green space, affordable housing, cultural retail and food opportunities, and health resources. In order to bring this plan to light, Anderson and his colleagues are asking for support from legislators to draft a bill and financial help from corporate sponsors and private donors.
This bridge is a step in restorative justice for the Rondo neighborhood and its community from the state claiming eminent domain, creating long-overdue economic opportunities and revitalize Rondo’s vibrant culture of African American ownership and leadership. The Rondo community is not the first community affected by gentrification and displacement, however, The Rondo Land Bridge will be a global model for restoration and impartial development of success.
July 1, 2021, Congresswoman, Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.), helped pass the Investing in a New Vision for the Environment and Surface Transportation in America Act, which includes three critical projects in St. Paul: ReConnect Rondo was one of the projects for $5.2 million. “Funds to be used for planning phase to identify needs, issues and alternatives to determine critical elements, including equity in transportation outcomes (social, economic, environmental) allowing for important and necessary analysis and environmental screening; project management, area planning and design, project assessment, market research, financial evaluation, community outreach, restorative development modeling and redevelopment programming.” McCollum Secures $5.2 Million for ReConnect Rondo As Part of House Democrats’ INVEST in America Act.
