Outside the US, Applying for an F-1 Visa

Century College requires students arrive at least two weeks before classes begin. The earliest a student in F-1 status may enter the United States is 30 days before the program start date on the form I-20.

You will find the “Program Start Date” on page 1 of your Form I-20 in the section called “Program of Study.” In this section you will also find the “Earliest Admission Date.” That is the earliest possible date you can enter the U.S. in F-1 status. Do not attempt to enter the United States in F-1 status before that date.

Form I-20: You will be issued a Form I-20 within five business days of receiving your acceptance letter. The Form I-20 will be sent to you via secure email through Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Secure File Transfer Service. You must print and sign the Form I-20 immediately after you receive it. You must travel with your printed paper Form I-20.
Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) ID and Registration Fee: Your Form I-20 has your unique SEVIS ID number. You must register your SEVIS ID and pay the I-901 fee prior to making an appointment for a visa interview at a United States embassy or consulate. The fee is currently $350 USD. For more information and to pay the I-901 SEVIS fee, please visit www.fmjfee.com.
Apply for an F-1 Visa: Complete the visa application and schedule a visa interview appointment. There may be an additional cost for the visa. Please contact your nearest United States embassy or consulate for all visa application requirements. Century College has no direct influence over the outcome of your visa application. You can find helpful resources on the Department of State Student Visa Webpage and on DHS Study in the States pages Applying for a Visa and Prepare for Your Visa Interview. You must bring your printed paper Form I-20 to your visa interview.
Submit Visa After your visa interview, please contact International Student Services to notify Century College if your visa application is approved or denied. When you receive your F-1 visa, please send a copy to international@century.edu.
Course Placement Testing: All students are required to have a course placement before they can register for classes. A course placement will tell you what classes you can take. Options for getting a course placement can be found on the Testing Center webpage. Please note: The course placement test is often different from the proof of English proficiency required in your application. International language tests, such as the TOEFL and IELTS cannot be used for course placement at Century College. Most students complete the Century College Local Placement online.
New Student Orientation: All new international students will complete an online orientation. Information regarding a general orientation and an international student orientation will be sent to you via email before the semester begins.
Review Financial Obligations: Read the Financial Responsibility Form to review the items you have committed to paying each academic year. When you arrive for your first semester, please be prepared to pay approximately $5560.00 for the first semester of tuition, fees, books, and annual health insurance. You will also need to pay any initial living and transportation expenses; these expenses will vary depending on your living arrangements. If you are bringing dependents these amounts will change. For estimated amounts of all expenses please review the Financial Responsibility Form.
Arrange Transportation and Housing: Century College does not provide or arrange transportation or housing for international students. Public transportation is available but limited. Many students choose to carpool or purchase a vehicle after they arrive. Century College does not provide on-campus housing; however, there are many housing options close to campus. You are responsible for making transportation and living arrangements before you arrive at Century College.
Immunizations: Two immunizations are required under Minnesota state law. All college students must have up-to-date immunizations for Tetanus and Diphtheria (TD) and Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR). Please complete the proof of immunization online form. If you have not received these immunizations in the past, you should consider obtaining them before arriving at Century College. Students who do not obtain the immunizations before arriving at Century will be responsible for arranging their own immunizations at a local clinic within 6 weeks of arrival.
Gather International University Transcripts (Optional): If you earned college credit outside of the United States and you would like to have your international transcripts evaluated by Century College, we recommend you gather your university transcripts and supporting documents while still in your home country. Contact Transfer Student Services for more information on the process to have your international credentials evaluated.

Report to Century College: Upon arrival in the United States, you are required to immediately report to the College by meeting with the International Student Services Coordinator for a New Student Check-In appointment. Please bring your Form I-20, passport, visa, and I-94 record with you to your appointment. Schedule your appointment on the International Student Services Appointment Page. Students should arrive at least two weeks before classes begin and should complete their New Student Check-In appointment within two business days of arriving.
Attend International Student Welcome Day: At Welcome Day we will review important information about maintaining your F-1 status and living in the United States as an international student. All new international students at Century College must attend Welcome Day. Attendance is mandatory. Information and details about Welcome Day will be emailed to you before the start of the semester. Please check your personal email for updates.
Purchase Health Insurance: International students must purchase the System-approved health insurance before registering for classes. You must purchase the insurance each year. You will receive more information about the enrollment process at your New Student Check-in Appointment. Visit the International Student Services webpage for more information about the health insurance requirement and coverage. Note: International Students participating in athletics may be required to purchase supplemental athletic health insurance. Please contact your athletic coach for details.
Course Registration: Your academic advisor will assist you with registering for the courses you need to maintain F-1 status and make progress in your degree. You will meet with your academic advisor after completing your New Student Check-In Appointment and paying for the required health insurance. To maintain your F-1 status, you are required to register for a minimum of 12 credits during each Fall and Spring semester. Of the 12 credits, at least 9 credits must be on-campus courses. *Note: due to the COVID-19 pandemic, federal guidance may allow for additional online courses.
Pay Tuition: Upon registering for your first semester courses, a down payment of $300.00 will be immediately due, with the balance of the tuition and fees due within 4 weeks from the start of the semester. No invoices or tuition statements are mailed to students. Students must log in to their e-services account to view their balance. Payments can be made in e-services or on-campus at the Business Office. The Tuition Payment webpage provides important dates, deadlines, and instructions for making payments. Visit the Tuition Rates & Fees webpage for detailed information on current rates.
Tuberculin Skin Test (TST): During your first semester at Century, you must complete a Tuberculin Skin Test (TB Screening). The test is done at the Century College Student Health Clinic. The cost for the test is $10. You will receive more information about this requirement in the International Student Orientation and at International Student Welcome Day.

Inside the US, Applying for a Change to F-1 Status

Century College cannot assist with the completion of the I-539 and cannot provide legal advice. You may wish to consult with an immigration attorney on the change of status process. Contact International Student Services at international@century.edu to notify Century College if your change of status application is approved or denied by USCIS.

Submit Notice of Approval from USCIS Contact International Student Services to notify Century College of your approved status. When you receive a notice of approval from USCIS (I-797), please send a copy to international@century.edu. If you do not receive a response from USCIS two weeks before classes begin, contact International Student Services to discuss the process to request a deferral to the next semester start.

If your current non-immigrant status does not allow study in the United States, you cannot register for courses at Century College until your approval notice is received.
