Foundation Scholarship Opportunities

The Century College Foundation offers over 100 scholarships annually. Students attending Century College can apply at the beginning of the Spring semester to receive a scholarship for the following Fall and Spring semesters. Funded through contributions from alumni, faculty and staff, community members, and corporations, the Century College Foundation awards scholarships totaling more than $300,000.

AAUW Northeast Metro Branch Nancy Jo Hendrickson Legacy

Portrait of Nancy Jo Hendrickson. AAUW (American Association of University Women) is an organization that has promoted higher education for women since 1881. The AAUW Northeast Metro Branch Nancy Jo Hendrickson Legacy Scholarship honors a member whose lifelong interest was in furthering education and opportunities for girls and women. To encourage a student to transfer to a four-year institution upon completion of a two-year degree program at Century College.

Abby Kay Lydon Memorial Scholarship

Portrait of Abby Kay Lydon. Abby was a remarkable young woman who made a difference in the lives of others. She battled health issues but found joy in helping others. A graduate of White Bear Lake Area High School, she continued to college even though she faced barriers. In her brief life, she touched and enriched many lives. Her family and friends support this scholarship to honor her life and empower others to carry on her legacy of helping. It is the hope that this scholarship will enable others to follow her example.

Al Aspelund Memorial Scholarship

Portrait of Al Aspelund. To encourage and support the education and career goals of highly motivated Century College students in need who are studying Accounting. If no accounting majors apply, then any Business, Marketing or Office Technology majors.

Alumni Legacy

The Alumni Legacy Scholarship was established in 2009 by the Alumni Association Board of Directors to attract students who, through family and relationships, have strong connections to the college and who will likely contribute to the development of the college’s relationship with its alumni long-term.

Portrait of Ron Anderson. To encourage and support new entering students who are the first in their families to attend college. This scholarship honors former Century College president Ron Anderson and his family.

Andrew S. Nesset Memorial Scholarship

Portrait of Andrew Nesset. To support currently enrolled students who have demonstrated aptitude and a strong desire to continue their education at Century but are challenged by life’s circumstances or lack the resources necessary to access higher education.

Andrew S. Nesset worked for over 20 years at Century College, starting as an adjunct faculty member in the English Department and eventually becoming an academic dean. Andrew became known as an invaluable, dependable, and constantly encouraging resource.

The applicant is pursuing an AFA degree in art and will have completed twelve (12) credits (4 classes) in coursework in AFA- Fine Art by the end of the second. Courses may include Art History 1, Art History 2, Drawing 1, 2D Design, and 3D Design.
Submits a (1) page personal essay that outlines his/her interest in a career in art and what has motivated them to choose this field of study
Preference is given to a student with financial need

Association for Facilities Maintenance Engineering

To encourage and support a student enrolled in the Facilities Maintenance Engineering program at Century College. This scholarship is supported by the professionals who work in the field of Facilities Engineering and are members of this association.

Barry Schlottman Memorial Music

To encourage and support a student pursuing music at Century College. Barry Schlottman was a trombonist and pianist who enjoyed performing Jazz, Dixieland, and Classical music. He also composed and arranged instrumental music for musicians in the Twin Cities.

Carolyn & Robert Odegard ESOL

This scholarship is in memory of the Odegards, who were active at Century College and in the local community.

Cedarleaf Coulter Science

Science faculty established this scholarship to honor Joy Cedarleaf and Judie Coulter, members of the Science Division at Century College who retired in 2020 after decades of service to the college.

The student is pursuing an AS in a science discipline at Century College, including physics, engineering, chemistry, biology, and natural science.
Eligible students include those seeking a degree in Additive and Digital Manufacturing (ADM) and a Biofabrication certificate.

CenterPoint Energy/ Home Service Plus- HVAC

To encourage and support a student at Century College who is pursuing either an AAS degree in HVAC-R Technology or an HVAC-R Technician diploma.

Amount: 2 at $1,000

The applicant will be enrolled at Century College as at least a second-semester student in the HVAC-R program.

Chris P. Boosalis O&P

To provide a scholarship to support the educational goals of O&P students who are seeking a Century degree. Chris P. Boosalis is a Century alum and has dedicated his career to serving people with limb loss in the Twin Cities since 1986. In 2003, he formed his own company, and eventually, his company joined Twin Cities Orthopedics. “It is easy to get excited about stories of amputees climbing mountains and winning races, but you have to walk before you can run. My hope is for future prosthetists and orthotics to put the patients first and let the business take care of itself.”

To empower students pursuing a career in a facilities/ technical / engineering or building trades-related field to overcome obstacles and barriers limiting their chances for success and access to higher education.

The applicant is enrolled in a building trades area: HVAC, solar, pre-engineering, welding, Facilities Engineering, or an area that a contractor would utilize.

Dental Hygiene

To encourage and motivate Dental Hygiene students to continue professional association involvement and develop actions, behaviors, and attitudes that are consistent with the profession’s commitment to public service.

Diana R. Hill

Portrait Diane-R-Hill The purpose of the Diana R. Hill scholarship is to support students studying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) courses, encouraging them to pursue a career in one of these fields. Diana has been a long-time supporter of the students of Century College and the work of the Foundation.

To help reduce educational expenses for a student enrolled in Century College’s nursing program. This scholarship remains with the applicant while the student is in good standing in the Associate of Science in Nursing Program at Century College. In memory of the Kohlers.

Portrait of Brian Kohler To encourage and support students with financial needs pursuing a Century Nursing degree. Established by the Kohler Family in memory of their son Brian to award one scholarship for $1,000 annually through an endowed scholarship fund.

Dr. Karl Gerber Leadership & Service

Portrait of Dr.Karl-Gerber Dr. Karl Gerber became president of Lakewood Community College in 1968 and completed his service in 1985. He provided the needed leadership to move the new, fledgling college into a highly regarded educational institution. This scholarship pays tribute to the history of Lakewood Community College and the effective leadership of Dr. Carl Gerber.

This is given in memory of Ellen Mamer, a beloved former ESOL teacher at Century College.

To encourage students interested in Gender Studies to complete the Gender Studies Certificate Program.

*Applicant has completed at least 12 college-level credits with a GPA of 3.25+
Applicant has completed at least two (2) courses included in the GST Certificate Program with a strong B average or above
Applicant adds the GST Certificate to degree plan and submits an Interactive DARS Audit for verification
Submits a one (1) page letter discussing reasons for pursuing the Gender Studies Certificate and how Gender Studies training will apply to future academic and career plans

George S. Hill

Portrait of George-S-Hill George S. Hill’s siblings established this scholarship in honor of his 70th birthday to encourage and support students studying in one of the STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) to pursue a career in one of these fields.

Gladys Dickey Teaching

Portrait of Gladys-Dickey To honor Gladys Dickey, a lifelong educator, by encouraging students to enter the field of education. Gladys Dickey was born in Iowa in 1888 and began her lifelong career as an elementary school teacher in 1912. She loved children and children’s literature - her enthusiasm for the stories of early American history was contagious. She touched so many lives and enriched them all, not only of her pupils but of her nephews and nieces, who hope that this scholarship will enable others to follow her example.

Herb Kjos Memorial English

Portrait of Herb-Kjos To recognize students for past academic achievement in English writing and literature and to support their continued pursuit of English and/or English-related fields.

The applicant will have completed 16 credits at Century College with a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ by the end of the spring semester.
Submits two (2) letters of recommendation - one (1) from a Century College English Faculty member

Applicants who demonstrate proficiency in writing or the study of literature will receive preference
Applicants meet the following requirements:
- Completion of English 1021 and another college-level English course at application
- A minimum grade of B in each English class taken at Century College
- Cumulative GPA of 25 or higher in English courses

Hill Human Services Scholarship

To support students at Century College from diverse backgrounds enrolled in the Human Services, Addiction Counseling, and Pre-Social Work programs.

James Eiden Memorial Orthotic & Prosthetic

This is in honor of James Eiden, a Korean War veteran who benefitted from a prosthetic device and volunteered as a model for the O&P program to support students in the field of orthotics and prosthetics who are in financial need.

Janna Hjelm Orthotics and Prosthetics Memorial

Portrait of Janna-Hjelm To pay tribute to Janna Hjelm, a retired physician and Century College alum. Passionate about her spiritual community and a life-long pursuit of knowledge, she was a kind, compassionate, incredibly bright woman. This scholarship was created to support and encourage a student new to the Orthotics or Prosthetics program.

Applicant is enrolled in an orthotic technician or practitioner course leading to an AAS degree or certificate in O&P during each semester the award is received.

Jared M. Durant Memorial Rad Tech

Portrait of Jared-M-Durant To pay tribute to Jared M. Durant, a former Century College Radiologic Technology student, by supporting the educational goals of students who are pursuing a career in radiologic technology.

Jenna Ann Fredrickson Memorial

Portrait of Jenna-Ann-Frederickson To encourage and support a student at Century College who has dealt with mental health and/or substance abuse problems or issues. Jenna grew up in White Bear Lake, MN, and graduated from WBLHS. She was creative, with a sense of humor, while being adventurous. Her interests included reading, writing, animals, and nature. The scholarship is sponsored by her family, who remember her for her spirit, courage, and love of life.

Jiang Chendao Memorial

Established by Yanmei Jiang and her family (husband Rongqing and children Zhen & Timothy Tu) in honor of her father, 蒋辰道, Jiang Chendao, a staunch believer in learning. He lived daily to its fullest, tirelessly pushing himself to “become a good person” through reading, reflection, and caring for others. Rose Polga Bayuk Nursing

Portrait of Rose-Polga-Bayuk Rose was from the Mesabi Iron Range in northern Minnesota and graduated from the Kahler Hospital (now Mayo Clinic) School of Nursing as an RN in 1938. During WW2, Rose served overseas from 1942 to 1946 as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. She was a ward charge nurse on U.S. Army Hospital Ship Thistle. In 1954, she moved with her husband to White Bear Lake, where he was the City Manager. Rose’s nursing career culminated with a position as an RN/Nursing Home Administrator in North St.

Paul. She served on a nursing advisory board at Lakewood in the late 1970s and had a lifelong interest in furthering educational opportunities for students to study nursing.

Rose had very strong leadership and organizational skills. Her motto in nursing and in life was “I serve others before I serve myself.” In June 2021, Rose was awarded the Silver Service Award Medallion by the National

WW2 Museum. She was the first nurse to receive this prestigious national award. Rose lived to be 105 years of age and was always physically active and engaged with people.
