About the Program
The English Transfer Pathway AA degree offers students a powerful option: the opportunity to complete an associate degree whose course credits will directly transfer to designated English bachelor’s degree programs at Minnesota State universities. The entire curriculum has been carefully designed so that you can complete a specific associate degree at a Minnesota State college and transfer to a Minnesota State university to earn a bachelor’s degree. Transfer Pathways can be a great resource for saving time and money as you work toward graduation.
Minnesota State universities include Bemidji State University; Metropolitan State University; Minnesota State University, Mankato; Minnesota State University Moorhead; Southwest Minnesota State University; St. Cloud State University; and Winona State University.
Transfer Pathway degrees may transfer to colleges and universities outside of the Minnesota State system, such as private and out-of-state schools. It is highly recommended that students interested in this possibility contact their intended transfer school, advisor/counselor, and program instructors for academic planning assistance.
English is a foundational academic discipline for every college student. Century College’s English Department offers you excellent courses that are the equivalent to any four-year college or university during your first two years, with these important features:
- Century is less expensive than four-year colleges and universities.
- Century English instructors have earned their Master’s and Ph.D. degrees; you won’t be taught by a teaching assistant.
- Century English instructors have many years of college teaching experience.
- You’ll have 25 different literature courses from which to choose.
In addition to typical first-year English composition courses, we also offer courses in:
- Literature
- Technical writing
- Advanced composition
- Creative writing
Century’s literature courses range from the general—such as American Literature and British Literature—to the specific, such as Minnesota Writers and Comics as Literature.
Our Writing Center is staffed by Century faculty who give students extensive, personal, one-on-one writing instruction. It also provides computers and other technology resources specifically reserved for students who are working on writing projects.
Some English courses are held in computer classrooms, two of which are specially designed for writing workshops, collaboration, and visual presentation of writing. In addition, all English courses are web-enhanced, and many are hybrid or offered totally online.
Century’s English department is a state leader in Accelerated English, an innovative method of writing instruction designed to promote student success.
Our student publication, The Century Times, has won numerous awards, including at the ACP Best of the Midwest College Journalism Convention.
Herb Kjos Memorial English Scholarship
This $2,000 scholarship (prorated between fall and spring semesters) recognizes and rewards students for their past academic achievement in English writing and literature and supports their continued pursuit of English and/or English-related fields.

- Experience:As a facilitator of writing classes, Glenda Reed draws on twenty years of consistent creative practice in the visual and literary arts to share the most important lesson any creator can learn: persist. In addition to teaching at Century College, Glenda Reed teaches writing classes with Minnesota State University, Mankato, Scholars Serving Time at Shakopee Correctional Facility, The Loft Literary Center, and COMPAS. Reed has served as managing editor of the Blue Earth Review, as a mentor with the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop, and now mentors beginning writers privately.Teaching Approach:“I’m inspired by the ethos of Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process (CRP): ‘leave the maker eager and motivated to get back to work.’ I encourage writers to make their own work and to know what that means. Together, we explore subjects and experiences that we can hold softly or at least spaciously: How did you or your character feel about the experience at the time? Who or what supported you or your character during this time? What were the sources of joy?”Education:2023 | Minnesota State University, Mankato | Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Nonfiction • Three-year intensive study of writing craft and pedagogy, including fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, first-year writing, and anti-racist pedagogy. 2015-2016 | The Loft Literary Center Mentor Series Fellow • Selective cohort mentored by six nationally acclaimed writers of prose and poetry. 2007 | Beloit College | Bachelor of Arts (BA) | Studio Art, Summa Cum Laude • Presidential Scholarship (four-year, merit-based scholarship).Notable:2024 Minnesota State Arts Board Creative Individuals Award ($10,000); 2023 Minnesota Regional Arts Council Next Step Grant ($5,000 award); 2022 Minnesota State University, Mankato Creative Fellowship ($2,000 award); 2019 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant ($10,000 award); 2019 Jerome Foundation Artist Travel Grant ($5,000 award); 2018 Partnership Art Grant, ArtPlace America ($50,000 award); 2017 Creative Placemaking Award, Springboard for the Arts ($1,500 award); 2016 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant ($10,000 award); 2015 Barbara Deming Memorial Fund Grant ($1,000 award); 2015 Minnesota Regional Arts Council Next Step Grant ($4,000 award); 2015 Loft Literary Creative Writing Mentorship Award ($1,000 award)Glenda ReedFacultyBioEnglish651-444-3941
