February 21, 2024Pursuing an education has numerous benefits that extend beyond career advancement, including improved communication skills, and opportunities to connect with new people.
First-generation student Hem Regmi understands the value of these skills in an interconnected, world economy. Originally from Nepal, Hem appreciates the necessity of education leading to an expanded worldview. As a global citizen, he speaks Nepali, English, and Hindi.
“A friend recommended Century College because of the diversity of the student body, and the welcoming atmosphere. That was important to me,” he notes.
Now in his second year, Hem decided to attend Century College for other reasons as well, including the College’s stellar reputation, affordable classes, and also because it’s close to home. “I did my research and Century College ranked high in terms of quality education,” Hem remembers.
A Love of Computers and Web Design
Initially, Hem began his studies by taking General Education courses before delving into web design in the Visual Communications Careers program. As he began to pursue more web design courses, he discovered a newfound love for the subject. His career progression is natural—Hem is instinctively creative, and was drawing on a MacBook when he was just ten years old.
Among his favorite VCC instructors is Tunji Akanbi. “He’s always available to help students with problem-solving,” Hem enthuses. He also praises Abigail Dominguez, another VCC instructor whom he finds highly skilled.
College Support and Career Aspirations
Upon earning his degree, Hem intends to obtain a certificate in IT to broaden his career options, and he plans to start his own freelance business in web design. He is currently employed with Century College’s IT department and has thoroughly enjoyed his experience working with his supervisors, Luis Flores and Nermina Kalesic. “I’ve learned so much from them,” he says.
Between work and school responsibilities, Hem doesn’t have much time for other activities; however, he has found the staff of Century’s Asian American & Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) program particularly supportive. “They always stay in touch with me and let me know of events that I may enjoy,” he says.
Advice for New Century College Students
For students who are new to Century College, Hem recommends that they do not hesitate to ask questions in class and that they not feel embarrassed if they are unsure about something.
“Century College professors are non-judgmental and willing to help,” he advises, “Being open and communicative is essential to a successful education.”
Hem also stresses that Century College faculty members are incredibly supportive.
“I’m grateful that I have chosen to pursue my education at such a nurturing institution as Century College.”
